ADMISSION PROCEDURES

Restricted enrolment numbers

Every year the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano establishes the maximum number of students who can be admitted to the Bachelor’s Degree Course in Applied Computer Science. For the academic year 2008/2009 the maximum number of students who can be admitted is 100. In addition, 50 places are reserved for non-EU citizens.

Concurrent enrolment at several universities or in several courses at the same university is not allowed.

Qualifications required for admission

Candidates are eligible to enrol in the Bachelor’s Degree Course if they possess the following qualifications:
a) diploma from a five-year high school course;
b) diploma from a four-year high school course, with or without a certificate attesting that they have successfully completed a one-year complementary course;
c) degree (irrespective of their secondary school qualifications);
d) qualifications equivalent to those in points a), b) and c).

Candidates must be in possession of the relevant certificate by the time of enrolment at the latest, otherwise they will be unable to finalise enrolment procedures.

In addition, non-EU citizens resident abroad will have to pass a compulsory Italian-language assessment test. The exact date for the test in 2008 will be announced by the Language Centre. Further information is available at the Language Centre of Free University of Bozen/Bolzano, e-mail language.centre@unibz.it.

Admission requirements

Besides the aforementioned qualifications, candidates must also have:
  • adequate knowledge of at least one of the course’s official teaching languages
  • adequate general and specific knowledge.

These requirements must be declared by the candidate in his/her "Dossier".

PRE-ENROLMENT

There are two pre-enrolment sessions:
  • February 18th – April 4th, 2008
  • June 3rd - August 22th, 2008

Participation in the first session is strongly advised, as it will allow the candidate to have a better chance of obtaining a place on the course - the vast majority of places (90%) will probably be assigned in the first session - and to complete enrolment procedures in plenty of time before the beginning of the University year.
N.B.: those who pre-enrol for the BSc in Applied Computer Science in the first session cannot pre-enrol for the same course in the second session. They can, however, pre-enrol for other undergraduate courses.

The application for pre-enrolment – which is possible for more than one degree – must be done through the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano’s website http://www.unibz.it/students/secretariat/pre_enrolment_online_p1/introduction_pre-enrolment/index.html?LanguageID=EN.
Those who do not have an Internet access can use the computers provided for this purpose by the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano (in Bolzano and Bressanone). The form must be filled in online and must be printed out entirely and signed. It must be handed in or sent by post to the Student Secretariat of Bozen/Bolzano:
  • by April 4th 2008, 12.00 a.m.
  • by August 22th, 2008, 12.00 a.m.
Attention! Non-EU citizens resident abroad must also pre-enroll trough the Embassy:
  • by May 2008 (exact date will be announced by the Ministry)
Applications that arrive without a signature, without all the necessary enclosures, after the deadline, or by email or fax cannot be taken into consideration.

The date of the postmark will not be taken into consideration!

The following documents must be enclosed with the pre-enrolment form:
  • a passport-size colour photo;
  • a photocopy of a valid identity card or passport (front/back);
  • a dossier written in Italian, German or English composed as follows:

Dossier
Study curriculum
copy of the report cards issued by the candidate's secondary school on plain paper with marks for all subjects from the third-last and second-last years of secondary school.
If these years were spent in a school abroad, it is also necessary to enclose a document issued by that secondary school detailing the range of marks awarded and the mark from which is generally considered a pass, as well as the highest mark available.
This can be presented in the original language.
Translation of the report card
Translation of the report card into one of the three official teaching languages of the University (this does not have to be certified).
Personal Statement Letter
A personal statement letter that is no longer than one side of typed A4, written in English, Italian or German, in which the candidate explains why he/she would like to enrol for this degree programme.
Knowledge of Language
If the subjects taught at the school do not include German, Italian or English, the candidate must enclose a certificate attesting to knowledge of at least one of these languages.

In the event that the candidate wishes to pre-enrol for more than one programme, an application form and accompanying documentation must be completed for each faculty.

Non-EU candidates resident abroad must carry out the enrolment procedures both through the Italian authorities (Consulate or Embassy) in the country in which they obtained or are to obtain their academic qualifications and directly with the University. The deadlines imposed by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (Ministero dell’Istruzione, dell’Università e della Ricerca (www.miur.it) must be respected: this year the timespan is 19th May-14th June 2008, see Study in Italy. Should candidates not follow this procedure with their local Italian consulate, the application that they delivered direct to the University will be declared null and void. The Italian authorities abroad are the only ones able to accept and send applications to the University.

Evaluation can then only take place from the documentation presented with the application form by the candidate. It is the candidate’s responsibility, therefore, to make sure that the application is complete.
In order to avoid long queues, it is recommended that the delivery of these documents does not take place in the last few days before the deadline.

SELECTION PROCEDURE AND ADMISSION RANK LIST

The selection procedure consists in the evaluation of a dossier by an application committee. This dossier must be sent by every student together with their pre-enrolment form.

The results of this selection procedure will be published as rank lists for enrolment: one for EU citizens and one for non-EU citizens.
The rank lists will be published on the notice boards of the Faculty and of the Student Secretariat, as well as on the web pages of the University.

First session:
The results of the first session will be published on May 05th, 2008.
Those candidates who have been admitted through the rank lists will have to pay the first instalment of university fees (€ 575) and deliver the receipt to the Student Secretariat by no later than June 30st, 2008. The instructions for the payment can be found here. Once this receipt has been received, candidates are guaranteed a place on the course.
Those who do not pay, or who do not deliver the receipt to the Student Secretariat by the deadline, will automatically lose their place and there will be a period where candidates on the waiting list will be able to enrol.
Candidates will then be able to enrol on the BSc course in Applied Computer Science by presenting their application by September 26th, 2008 (see section entitled “Enrolment”). Once the university fees have been paid, there will be no refund unless the candidate does not pass his/her secondary-school leaving exam.

Second session:
The results of the second session will be published on September 08th, 2008.
The candidates who have been admitted through the rank lists will be able to enrol on the BSc course in Applied Computer Science by presenting their application by September 26th, 2008.

ENROLMENT

Aspiring students well positioned on the rank list may enrol for the Bachelor’s Degree Course in Applied Computer Science submitting their application by September 26th, 2008, 12.00 a.m., at the Student Secretariat in Bozen/Bolzano, via Sernesi 1.
With the application the following documents must be enclosed:
  • receipt of the first payment of university fees (if this was not delivered in May);
  • receipt of the provincial tax for the right to study
The payment slips are available in the Student Secretariat.

Prospective students who have secondary school certificates and/or qualifications from abroad must also enclose:
  • original of the declaration of equivalent value of the secondary school certificate/qualification issued by the Italian consulate or embassy abroad;
  • original of the official translation of their academic qualification into Italian (translation is not necessary if the certificates have been issued in German)

Non-EU citizens must also enclose:
  • original secondary school certificate;
  • a valid residence permit for stays in Italy must be presented to the Student Secretariat.

The rank list is only valid for the academic year in question. In the event that candidates on the list do not apply to become students by the date stated, the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano reserves the right to accept applications from students further down the list. The names will be published on www.unibz.it within in a week of the enrolment deadline.

TUITION FEES

Enrolment taxes and fees for the 2008/2009 academic year and the provincial tax for the right to study amount to:
  • university fees € 1150
  • provincial tax: € 129,50
